Muscicapa phoebe was named by Latham (1790) [Latham did not describe this species in the genus Sayornis, but I can't find the original genus (M.D. Uhen)]. It is extant.
It was recombined as Sayornis phoebe by Wetmore (1962), Parmalee (1992), Clements et al. (2017).
