Taxonomy
Geococcyx was named by Wagler (1831). It is extant. Its type is Saurothera californiana.

It was assigned to Neomorphinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); to Neomorphini by del Hoyo et al. (2014); and to Cuculidae by Lambrecht (1933) and Clements et al. (2017).
