Wetmoregyps was named by Miller (1928). Its type is Morphnus daggetti.

It was reranked as Buteogallus (Wetmoregyps) by Steadman and Mead (2010).

It was assigned to Accipitridae by Lambrecht (1933); to Buteoninae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); and to Buteogallus by Steadman and Mead (2010).
