Sterna philadelphia was named by Ord (1815). It is extant.

It was recombined as Larus philadelphia by Hay (1902), Wetmore (1956), Guthrie (2005); it was recombined as Larus (Chroicocephalus) philadelphia by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Chroicocephalus philadelphia by Coues (1862), Hay (1930), Clements et al. (2017).
