Tringa fulicaria was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Phalaropus fulicaria by Guthrie (2005); it was recombined as Phalaropus fulicarius by Campbell (1976), Zelenkov et al. (2008) and Clements et al. (2017).
