Taxonomy
Sulakocetus was named by Mchedlidze (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It was considered monophyletic by Muizon (1987).
It was assigned to Squalodontidae by Mchedlidze (1976), Barnes (1985), Muizon (1987), Carroll (1988) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Odontoceti by Geisler and Sanders (2003); to Waipatiidae by Fordyce (1994), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001) and Uhen (2008); and to Odontoceti by Tanaka and Fordyce (2014).
