Taxonomy
Tetrao mutus was named by Montin (1781). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lagopus mutus by Burchak-Abramovich and Burchak (1998), Mlikovsky (2002), Seward et al. (2006) and Zelenkov et al. (2008); it was recombined as Lagopus muta by Clements et al. (2017) and Carrera et al. (2018).
