Bharatisiren was named by Bajpai and Domning (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l]. Its type is Bharatisiren indica.
It was assigned to Sirenia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dugonginae by Domning (1997), Bajpai and Domning (1997), Bajpai et al. (2006), Berta (2017) and Domning (2018).
