Caribosiren was named by Reinhart (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. Its type is Caribosiren turneri.

It was assigned to Halianassinae by Reinhart (1959); to Metaxytheriinae by Heal (1973); to Sirenia by Sepkoski (2002); to Halitheriinae by Domning (1994), Domning (1996) and Domning (2008); to Dugongidae by Carroll (1988), Voss (2014) and Voss and Hampe (2017); and to Halitheriinae by Domning (2018).

Reinhart 1959Cheek teeth reduced to five or six in type; M2/ lophodont without posterior cingulaum or hypoconule; incisors absent; rostrum deflected to similar sharp degree as adult Dugnong; double arch in resorostral fossa; nasals separated in meid-line by frontals; lacrimal with well-developed anterolateral tuberosity; no lacrimal duct; alvelolar border with oval outline; zygomatic process of maxilla strongly developed, extends posteroventrally and medianly to anterior end of squamosal zygoma anteroposterior elongation of upper half of neural spine on midline dorsal vertebrae.
