Tholonium was named by Haeckel (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Tholoniidae.
It was assigned to Tholoniidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
