Xenosiren was named by Domning (1989) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-l]. Its type is Xenosiren yucateca.

It was assigned to Rytiodontinae by Domning (1989); to Sirenia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dugonginae by Domning (1994), Domning (1996), Domning (1997), Domning (2008), Voss (2014), Berta (2017) and Domning (2018).
