Taxonomy
Septifer elegans was named by Waring (1917). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Locality 5 (of Waring 1917) - Santa Monica Mountains [Coal Canyon Fm], which is in a Thanetian marine horizon in the Coal Canyon Formation of California.

It was recombined as Septifer (Septifer) elegans by Moore (1983).
