Taxonomy
Falco lagopus was named by Pontoppidan (1763). It is extant. It is the type species of Archibuteo.
It was recombined as Archibuteo lagopus by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Buteo (Triorchis) lagopus by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Buteo lagopus by Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Zelenkov et al. (2008) and Clements et al. (2017).
