Falco velox was named by Wilson (1812). It is extant.

It was recombined as Accipiter velox by Miller (1911) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Accipiter striatus velox by Wetmore (1937), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Olson and Hilgartner (1982) and Clements et al. (2017).
