Taxonomy
Tetrao urophasianus was named by Bonaparte (1827). It is extant. It is the type species of Centrocercus.

It was recombined as Centrocercus urophasianus by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Clements et al. (2017).
