Archibuteo regalis was named by Gray (1844). It is extant.

It was recombined as Buteo (Triorchis) regalis by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Buteo regalis by Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Broughton (2004) and Clements et al. (2017).
