Pinnarctidion was named by Barnes (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. Its type is Pinnarctidion bishopi.
It was assigned to Enaliarctidae by Carroll (1988); to Desmatophocini by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Phocoidea by Berta (1994) and Rice (1998); to Carnivora by Sepkoski (2002); to Enaliarctinae by Barnes (1979), Barnes (1989) and Barnes (2008); and to Pinnipedimorpha by Deméré et al. (2003) and Berta (2017).
