Cupressus mohavensis was named by Axelrod (1939). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cache Peak (P-3643), which is in a Hemingfordian/Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Bopesta Formation of California.

D. I. Axelrod 1939Twig 1.9 cm. long with alternately placed branchlets about 7 to 8 mm. long and 1 mm. wide, the whole spray apparently flattened in one plane ; leaves acute, opposite, and appressed, the terminal ones ending in hook-like processes. Cone globose, with opposite shield-shaped scales; nature of the scale processes not observable; 1.3 cm. long and 1.4 cm. wide.
