Pithecolobium miocenica was named by Axelrod (1939). It is extant. Its type specimen is UCMP 1474, 1475. Its type locality is Cache Peak (P-3643), which is in a Hemingfordian/Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Bopesta Formation of California.

Axelrod 1939 | Leaflets asymmetrically elliptical or obovate, the apex rounded and one side of the blade longer than the other, the base cuneate and inequilateral; 2.7 cm. long and widest above the middle, 1.1 to 1.5 cm. wide; apparently sessile; midrib stout, straight below and curved distally where thinner; 5 to 6 secondaries departing at about 55°, pursuing a rather straight course distally, camptodrome; tertiaries irregular, forming large meshes; margin entire; texture coriaceous. |
