Taxonomy
Eryops was named by Cope (1877). It is not extant. Its type is Eryops megacephalus. It is the type genus of Eryopidae.
It was assigned to Temnospondyli by Gauthier et al. (1989); to Eryopoidea by Yates and Warren (2000); to Temnospondyli by Maddin et al. (2012); to Eryopidae by Cope (1884), Hay (1902), Watson (1919), Carroll (1988), Kissel and Lehman (2002) and Schoch (2013); and to Eryopinae by Schoch and Milner (2014).
