Branchiosaurus was named by Fritsch (1876). It is not extant. Its type is Branchiosaurus salamandroides.
It was assigned to Temnospondyli by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Branchiosauridae by Carroll (1988), Schoch (2013) and Schoch and Milner (2014).
