Tringa pugnax was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Philomachus pugnax by Mannermaa (2002), Zelenkov et al. (2008) and Bedetti and Pavia (2013); it was recombined as Calidris pugnax by Clements et al. (2017).
