Taxonomy
Melosaurus was named by von Meyer (1857). It is not extant. Its type is Melosaurus uralensis.

It was assigned to Rachitomi by Watson (1919); to Melosaurinae by Golubev (1995) and Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Melosauridae by Carroll (1988) and Shishkin et al. (2000).
