Taxonomy
Sterna cerulea was named by Bennett (1840). It is extant.

It was recombined as Procelsterna cerulea by Steadman (1992), Steadman and Intoh (1994), Wragg (1995) and Steadman (1999); it was recombined as Anous ceruleus by Clements et al. (2017).
