Deltasaurus was named by Cosgriff (1965). Its type is Deltasaurus kimberleyensis.
It was assigned to Rhytidosteidae by Cosgriff (1965), Cosgriff (1974), Cosgriff and Zawiskie (1979), Warren and Black (1985), Carroll (1988) and Marsicano and Warren (1998); and to Peltosteginae by Schoch and Milner (2000).
