Microposaurus was named by Haughton (1925). It is not extant. Its type is Microposaurus casei.
It was assigned to Tertreminae by Schoch and Milner (2000); to Trematosauridae by Haughton (1925), Warren and Black (1985), Carroll (1988) and Damiani and Rubidge (2003); to Trematosauroidea by Damiani (2004); and to Trematosaurinae by Warren (2012).
