Taxonomy
Metoposauroidea was named by Watson (1919) [nom. transl. ex Metoposauridae Watson 1919]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Stereospondylida by Kuhn (1971); to Temnospondyli by Carroll (1988), Murry (1989) and Long and Murry (1995); and to Trematosauria by Yates and Warren (2000).
