Columba passerina was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chamaepelia passerina by Wetmore (1922); it was recombined as Columbigallina passerina by Bernstein (1965); it was recombined as Columbina passerina by Pregill et al. (1988), Olson et al. (1990), Morgan (1994), Clements et al. (2017) and Oswald and Steadman (2018).
