Seymouriidae was named by Williston (1911). It is the type family of Seymourioidea.
It was synonymized subjectively with Conodectidae by Hay (1930).
It was assigned to Pareiasauria by Case (1911); to Seymouriamorpha by Kuhn (1946); to Seymourioidea by Carroll et al. (1972) and Bulanov (2003); and to Seymouriamorpha by Lewis and Vaughn (1965), Vaughn (1966), Carroll (1988) and Martens et al. (2005).
