Taxonomy
Pterygornis dapingfangensis was named by Wang et al. (2014) [A small, sparrow-sized enantiornithine, distinguishable from other enantiornithines by the combination of the following morphologies: surangular with rostroventrally sloping rostral margin, in contrast to the rostrodorsal condition amongst other enantiornithines; omal half shaft of coracoid curved medially; sternum bearing an external rostral spine and a pair of craniolateral processes, both features absent in most other enantiornithines, e.g. Eoenantiornis buhleri, Vescornis hebeiensis and Cathayornis yandica; alular and major metacarpals fused with each other, a feature unknown in other Early Cretaceous enantiornithines; and trochlea of metatarsal II with well-formed ginglymoid articulation and a wide articular furrow on its planar surface.]. Its type specimen is IVPP V20729, a partial skeleton (disarticulated and incomplete skeleton, representing an adult individual based on the complete fusion of the compound bones), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Gonggao, Chaoyang, which is in an Aptian terrestrial mudstone in the Jiufotang Formation of China.
