Limnoscelis was named by Williston (1911). Its type is Limnoscelis paludis. It is the type genus of Limnoscelidae.

It was assigned to Limnoscelidae by Williston (1911), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988) and Berman and Sumida (1990).
