Taxonomy
Lestris antarcticus was named by Lesson (1831). It is extant.

It was recombined as Catharacta antarctica by Mathews (1912) and del Hoyo et al. (2014); it was recombined as Stercorarius antarcticus by Clements et al. (2017).
