Phlegethontiidae was named by Cope (1875). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Molgophidae by Hay (1902); it was misspelled as Phlegetontiidae by Kuhn (1946), McGinnis (1967), Lund (1978), Thayer (1985), Carroll (1988), Carroll et al. (1998) and Anderson (2002).

It was assigned to Stegocephali by Cope (1875); to Microsauria by Cope (1875); to Aistopoda by Kuhn (1946), McGinnis (1967), Lund (1978) and Carroll (1988); and to Aistopoda by Thayer (1985), Carroll et al. (1998) and Anderson (2002).
