Pantylidae was named by Case (1911). Its type is Pantylus.

It was assigned to Pantyloidea by Nopcsa (1928); to Pantyliformes by Hay (1930); to Captorhinomorpha by Kuhn (1946); to Tuditanomorpha by Carroll and Gaskill (1978), Carroll (1988) and Carroll et al. (1998); and to Recumbirostra by Anderson (2007).
