Hylerpeton was named by Owen (1862). It is not extant. Its type is Hylerpeton dawsoni.

It was assigned to Hylonomidae by Hay (1902) and Moodie (1916); and to Gymnarthridae by Carroll (1988) and Carroll et al. (1998).
