Taxonomy
Porphyrio paepae was named by Steadman (1988). Its type specimen is BPBM 165649, a set of limb elements (femur), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hanatekua Shelter 2 site, Hiva Oa, which is in a Holocene terrestrial horizon in French Polynesia.
