Taxonomy
Nothosaurus cymatosauroides was named by Sanz (1983) [A small nothosaur with a relatively short and broad rostrum; upper temporal fossae 2.3 times longer than the longitudinal diameter of the orbit; laterally flaring squamosals.]. Its type specimen is MGSB M-503 and M-504, a skull (part and counterpart of a horizontally split skull), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Montral-Alcover quarries, which is in a Longobardian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Muschelkalk Formation of Spain.
