Andrias was named by Tschudi (1837). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cryptobranchus by Naylor (1981).

It was assigned to Cryptobranchidae by Estes and Tihen (1964), Estes (1981), Carroll (1988), Matsui et al. (2008) and Böhme (2008).
