Mioproteus was named by Estes and Darevsky (1978). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Venczel and Codrea (2019).

It was assigned to Proteidae by Naylor (1978), Estes (1981), Carroll (1988) and Venczel and Codrea (2019).
