Taxonomy
Hipponix pristinus was named by Zinsmeister (1983). Its type specimen is UCR 6887/200, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Simi Hills, Las Virgenes Sandstone, which is in a Thanetian coastal sandstone in the Las Virgenes Formation of California.
