Plethodon was named by Tschudi (1838). It is extant.

It was assigned to Plethodontinae by Estes (1981) and Holman (1985); and to Plethodontidae by Cope (1875), Carroll (1988), Holman et al. (1990) and Frank and Ramus (1996).
