Xenopus was named by Wagler (1827). It is extant.
It was assigned to Xenopinae by Sanchiz (1998); to Xenopodinae by Henrici and Báez (2001) and Báez and Harrison (2005); and to Pipidae by Estes (1975), Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996), Henrici (1998), Gissi et al. (2006) and Blackburn et al. (2019).
