Macropelobates was named by Noble (1924). It is not extant. Its type is Macropelobates osborni.
It was assigned to Pelobatinae by Sanchiz (1998); and to Pelobatidae by Noble (1924), Zweifel (1956), Carroll (1988), Henrici (1994), Henrici and Haynes (2006) and Henrici (2009).
