Wawelia was named by Casamiquela (1963). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ceratophrynidae by Carroll (1988); to Ceratophryinae by Baez and Peri (1990), Sanchiz (1998) and Evans et al. (2008); and to Ceratophryidae by Evans et al. (2014).
