Protorothyrididae was named by Price (1937). Its type is Protorothyris. It was considered paraphyletic by Boy and Martens (1991) and Müller and Reisz (2006).
It was synonymized subjectively with Romeriidae by Kuhn (1966) and Carroll and Baird (1972).
It was assigned to Cotylosauria by Price (1937); to Captorhinomorpha by Kuhn (1946); to Captorhinomorpha by Carroll (1988) and Boy and Martens (1991); to Captorhinomorpha by Martens et al. (2005); and to Eureptilia by Müller and Reisz (2006).
It was synonymized subjectively with Romeriidae by Kuhn (1966) and Carroll and Baird (1972).

L.I. Price 1937 | Skull slender and acuminate. Snout rather sharp. Eyes large, centrally located. Parietals deeply emarginated along occipital crest. Vestigial otic notch with reduced supra-temporal and parietal above and squamosal below. The supra-temporal does not appear to touch the postorbital. Occipital plate slanting gently backward from crest. Pineal foramen quite small and quite close to occipital crest, resembling closely the more specialized pelycosaurian condition. |
