Taxonomy
Hylonomus was named by Dawson (1860). It is not extant. Its type is Hylonomus lyelli. It is the type genus of Hylonomidae.

It was assigned to Microsauria by Dawson (1882); to Hylonomidae by Hay (1902) and Moodie (1916); to Romeriidae by Carroll (1964); and to Protorothyrididae by Carroll (1988) and Haubold et al. (2005).
