Captorhinikos was named by Olson (1954). Its type is Captorhinikos valensis. It was considered monophyletic by Modesto et al. (2014).
It was assigned to Captorhinidae by Olson (1954), Seltin (1959), Olson (1962), Olson (1970) and Carroll (1988); and to Moradisaurinae by de Ricqlès and Taquet (1982) and Modesto et al. (2014).
