Taxonomy
Pleurocystites mitratus was named by Regnell and Paul (1981). Its type specimen is HME6030a-b and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Craig Head Quarry, 3 miles east of Girvan, Kiln Mudstone Member, which is in a Cheneyan carbonate mudstone in the Craighead Formation of the United Kingdom.

Paul 1981A species of Pleurocystites with three pectinirhombs, symmetrical theca with a pair of aboral thecal lobes; periproct almost perfectly bilaterally symmetrical, without a rectal lobe, periproctals small, each ornamented with a small central pit. Ornament of the antanal surface consists of strong radiating ridges and weaker concentricgrowth striae. The periproct border is ornamented with weak ridges and rows of granules parallel to the margin of the periproct. External flanges of the proximal stem ossicles are rounded and smooth.
