Follicatena was named by Ott (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: P m Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 218,941,978]. It is not extant. Its type is Follicatena cautica.
It was assigned to Celyphiidae by Boiko et al. (1991); to Calcarea by Sepkoski (2002); to Thaumastocoeliidae by Finks et al. (2004); and to Thaumastocoeliinae by Senowbari-Daryan and Rigby (2015).
