Sclerosauridae was named by Nopsca (1923). Its type is Sclerosaurus.

It was reranked as the subfamily Sclerosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928).

It was assigned to Procolophonidae by Nopcsa (1928); to Pareiasauria by Kuhn (1966); to Procolophonomorpha by Kuhn (1971); and to Procolophonoidea by Carroll (1988).
